The Biography of Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe; a Biography

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. His father abandoned Poe’s mother and his sibling in 1810; a year later Poe’s mother had died from tuberculosis. Poe was taken into the Allan family in Richmond, Virginia; he was not adopted, just taken in. Poe moved to England with the Allan family for the remainder of his childhood; he went to university but claiming that his father did not give him enough money to pay for his expenses; he dropped out and came back to Boston where he became involved in a military career as a private.

Poe’s wife, Virginia has passed away from tuberculosis in 1847; as Poe was very distressed he started drinking and eventually collapsed. He returned to his health a year later. In 1849, Poe had passed away from a mysterious death that left everyone puzzled. No one knew if he died from distress or alcoholism. “Poe's final words were "Lord help my poor soul."” (Poem Hunter, 2014, ¶17)

Poe carried a huge legacy with him; “Poe was mostly recognized as a literary critic” (Poem Hunter, 2014, ¶23) Edgar Allan Poe was known for writing and publishing  various poems in his lifetime.

Her Eyes

Her Eyes

Amrit Pinglia

Her beautiful blue eyes

Were filled with deep white lies,

You knew she was trying-

I knew she was lying.

As others thought ill,

She was taught to kill.

She is a fake,

I don’t associate with snakes

I need her trust-

While she needs my lust.

I knew she was no good,

Living in this hood;

I am one of the few

That is not new;

New to her wicked tricks and games.

This poem is like Edgar Allan Poe’s poems because I used rhyming couplets and the rhyme scheme of aabbccddeeffgghh. Poe’s poems are very glum and have a disappointed tone, that is what I tried doing while creating this poem. Majority of Poe’s [poems have rhyming couplets or a unique rhyme scheme and that is what I kept in mind while writing this poem.

A Dream Within A Dream

A Dream Within A Dream

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgars Allan Poe’s, “A Dream Within A Dream”; is a poem about how Poem dreamt of going to a good university and get properly educated but failed to do so half way in this university years because he was unable to afford to pay the debts that were piling upon him. “A Dream Within A Dream” is how Poe looked at his dreams when he was a child dreaming about the future.

This poem is about how Poe dreamt of his future and how he was not able to ‘grasp’ it in time before his tragic death.

(Line 19-24)

O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?”

The rhyme scheme in this poem is aaabbccddeeffgghhhiijjkk. (Line12) “I stand amid the roar” and (Line 22) “One from the pitiless wave?” These two lines are two examples of figurative language; you can’t stand beside a roar, that’s a sound. A wave cannot be pitiless, it’s not alive to feel any pity.

(Line 13-15) “Of a surf-tormented shore,/ And I hold within my hand/ Grains of the golden sand-“ These 3 lines are symbolic because they describe his dreams and hopes; the shore symbolizes his mind, and the sand symbolizes his dreams and hopes. (Line 15) “Grains of the golden sand-“ Poe implied the use of imagery in this line.

Poe uses a very gloomy tone in this poem, since his poem is based on how hopeless he was achieving his dreams. (Line5-6) “That my days have been a dream;/ Yet if hope has flown away” (Line 19-22) “O God! can I not grasp/Them with a tighter clasp?/O God! can I not save/One from the pitiless wave?” (Line 5) “That my days have been a dream;” These are all examples of how Edgar Allan Poe incorporated a depressing tone of voice throughout the poem.

The break between line 11 and 12 represents the break between reality and his dream; lines 1-11 are about reality, while lines 12-14 are describing his dreams and how he could not grasp them. (Line 18) “While I weep- while I weep” this line shows the emotions Poe felt when was not able to grasp his dreams. (Line 19) “O God! Can I not grasp” the shift in voice changes to a more urgent call.

The title, “A Dream Within A Dream”; is about how Poe could not grasp his dreams that he wanted to attain but he could not because of the lack of money from his parents and how he was under debt trying to pursue his dreams of being a professional writer.

Alone

Alone

Edgar Allan Poe

“Alone” is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe; the title of this poem depicts that this piece of writing is going to be about isolation and about how Poe grew up as a child, since his mother died and his father abandoned him and his siblings. The theme of Poe’s poem is how he grew up differently compared to other children, the mood of this poem seems rather depressing and suspenseful judging from the title.

This poem is about how Edgar Allan Poe describes his childhood.

(Line 1-3) “From childhood’s hour I have not been/ As others were; I have not seen/ As others saw; I could not bring/ My passions from a common spring.”

(Line 21-22) “(When the rest of Heaven was blue)/ Of a demon in my view”

(Line 8) “And all I loved, I loved alone.”  All these examples are examples of how Poe looked at his childhood.

The setting of this poem seems like it’s from where Poe grew up, in Richmond Virginia.

(Line 14-16) “From the red cliff of the mountain,/ From the sun that round me rolled/ In its autumn tint of gold,”

(Line1) “From childhood’s hour I have not been” These are examples of how Poe described where he spent his childhood spent in Virginia.

There are many uses of figurative language in this piece of writing. For example;

(Line 1) “From childhood’s hour…” Childhood does not have an hour, it is years.

(Line 4) “My passions from a common spring.” Springs don’t create passions and such ideologies.

(Line 10) “Of a stormy life-“, (Line 11) “…Every depth of good and ill” (Line 15) “From the sun that round me rolled” (Line 21-22) “(When the rest of Heaven was blue)/ Of a demon in my view” these are all examples of figurative language used in this poem, “Alone”.

(Line 14-16) “From the red cliff of the mountain,/ From the sun that round me rolled/ In its autumn tint of gold,” (Line 17-19) “ From the lightning in the sky/ As it passed me flying by,/ From the thunder and the storm,” these are all forms of imagery in this writing piece.

Also, in this poem I found that there were rhymes couplets and end rhymes. The rhyme scheme in this poem goes like this; aabbccddeeffgghhiijjkk.

The tone and attitude of this poem is very dejected and unfortunate, (Line 1-4) “From childhood's hour I have not been/As others were; I have not seen/As others saw; I could not bring/My passions from a common spring.” These lines describe Poe as if he was rejected by society because of he did not feel passionate about the same things as other children felt together. (Line 21-22) “(When the rest of Heaven was blue)/ Of a demon in my view” this line refers to how unfortunate he was in this childhood years to not have felt the same bliss as other children felt. Poe felt like he was seeing hell wherever he was, whereas the other children saw heaven around him.

(Line 2-3) “As others were; I have not seen/ As others saw; I could not bring” the semicolons represent the pause when he compared other people against himself. Poe’s voice was consistent throughout the poem, his voice was rather depressed and gloomy, and that did not change.

(Line 21) “(When the rest of Heaven was blue)” This lines shows his thoughts; the line was a voice in his head, that it why it is in brackets.

Edgar Allan Poe’s, “Alone” is about how he spent his childhood, even teenager years alone in the company of his own mind. He preferred to be alone more than he preferred to be around other children or kids.

A Valentine

A Valentine

Edgar Allan Poe

In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem; “A Valentine” is a poem about a past/current lover, or it could be about people and how they act of Valentine’s Day in general.

The speaker of this poem would be a boy who is in love with a girl. The other character of this story would be the girl he is describing in the poem. There is no hint for where the setting could be.

The speaker seems like he’s giving his girlfriend an amulet to wear and treasure.

(Line 5-7)

“Search narrowly the lines!-they hold a treasure/ Divine- a talisman- an amulet/ That must be worn at heart…”

There are many figures of speech in this poem, for example;

Metaphor- (line 1) “For her this rhyme is penned.” This is a metaphor because the word ‘is’ is used to describe a word.

Simile- (line 2) “Brightly expressive as the twins of Leda,” This is a simile because as is used to describe the similarity between two objects.

Figurative language- (line 6-7) “an amulet/that must be worn at heart.” This is figurative because an amulet can’t be worn at heart literally; you can’t wear an amulet on your heart, that’s impossible.

Imagery- (line 3) “Shall find her own sweet name, that nesting lies/” this relates to imagery because the phase “sweet name” reminds me of pictures of strawberries; also, “nesting lies” seems like a birds nest with lies in it.

Rhyme- End of line 10 and 12 rhyme

(Line 10) “…knot

(Line 12)”…plot.”

The rhyme scheme in this poem is that the words that are at the end of every odd line, rhymes.

In “A Valentine”, Poe has a romantic, mysterious tone in this poem; compared to his usually non-romantic poems, this tends to be very kind and loving.

(Line 1-2) “For her this line is penned, whose luminous eyes,/ Brightly expressive as the twins of Leda…”  these lines are very romantic compared to Poe’s usual work.

(Line 14-19) “Eyes scintillating soul, there lies perdus/ Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing/ Of poets, by poets- as the name is a poet’s too,/ Its letters, although naturally lying/ Like the knight Pinto- Mendez Ferdinando-/ Still form a synonym for Truth- Crease trying!” these 5 lines build up a lot of suspense within the poem, mysterious suspense.

(Line 20) “You will not read the riddle, though you do your best you can do.” The last line of this poem leaves you wondering what the riddle is all about.

(Line1) “For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,” This line starts of the poem with the thought that the poem might be about true love about a loved one. (Line 5-6) “Search narrowly the lines!- they hold a treasure/ Divine- a talisman- an amulet” the dash in line 5 represent a surprise that the reader has yet find out, the dashes in line 6 represent a bigger meaning for the word divine, and how amulet is described. There are no major voice shifts in the poem, everything is consistent.

“A Valentine” is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe; Since Poe had a love for writing and suspense, the title of this poem could be written about someone he loves and finds beautiful and tying it all together with his love for suspense/mystery type writings.
